Your suggestions for improvement:
An airboat has a flat bottom and is propelled by a deck-mounted aircraft propeller.
ApplicationsIts shallow draft and absence of a marine propeller allow this vessel to reach areas inaccessible by boat or on foot, especially in marshes. Depending on size, it can be used for fishing, hunting and other recreational activities, for monitoring fauna and flora in nature preserves or for search and rescue operations in flooded areas.
TechnologiesThe motor sits on the vessel and drives an aircraft propeller which pushes air rearward, propelling the boat forward. Steering is via orientable vanes situated just aft of the propeller. This propulsion system can power the craft over hard surfaces, including ice. A safety cage surrounds the engine and propeller.
A large, heavy engine is required to push the boat to planing speed. Some air boats have a V-shaped or stepped hull, or reverse bow to improve turning stability and maneuverability. Some have a cabin, seats, a shelter or similar features.
Size and equipment will differ depending on use and required passenger capacity.
- Shallow draft
- High speed
- Limited maneuverability
- Restricted to calm waters
- Large engine limits deck space
