Your suggestions for improvement:
The AIS (Automatic Identification System) sends and receives information between vessels in close proximity via specialized on-board VHF transponders or receivers. This includes the ship's name and type, course, speed, destination, cargo and similar data.
ApplicationsA fundamental piece of safety equipment, the AIS transponder is required by SOLAS regulations on all vessels over 300 GT (gross tonnage) plying international waters, on all passenger vessels and on freighters over 500 GT. A receiver offers recreational boaters an added measure of security, while a transponder is an even better option.
TechnologiesAn AIS transponder is usually a housed unit linked to an antenna, which cannot be the same as that used by the regular VHF radio. Most are also receivers. Simple receivers can be VHF radios or a separate unit with a data display screen. Receivers and VHF radios can share an antenna.
Ships governed by the SOLAS convention must have Class A models, while other vessels can carry less powerful Class B units. Receivers can be connected to a computer, a GPS chart plotter or a multifunction center for graphic representation of sending station position and attendant data. Such a system can be set to sound an alarm in case of collision risk.
The choice between Class A and B will depend on whether or not the vessel is subject to SOLAS regulations. Recreational boaters may choose a simple receiver, rather than a transponder model.
