ApplicationsSuch speakers are used primarily for the pleasure of those who enjoy listening to music aboard. In a more practical vein, they may be employed to amplify the sound of the VHF for better comprehension or when crew cannot remain near a fixed unit.
TechnologiesThe speaker uses a flexible diaphragm to convert electrical energy to sound waves. Some have as many as four drivers, each operating in a specific frequency range, low, medium or high. The interior components of waterproof models are coated with an impermeable coating and are further protected by a perforated cover.
How to chooseChoice will depend on speaker power (measured in watts) and other technical and aesthetic characteristics. Several drivers will ensure full frequency coverage. Impedance (in ohms) should match that of the source. Built-in speakers require sufficient depth behind bulkheads or false ceilings and room for wiring. The minimum waterproofing standard is IPX6.
