A chain counter is an electronic instrument indicating how much chain has been run out while anchoring.
ApplicationsThese devices facilitate putting out the exact amount of chain required for secure anchoring, usually five times water depth, more if poor holding ground or weather conditions warrant.
TechnologiesPre-programmed and connected directly to the anchor windlass, the instrument counts the number of revolutions it makes and calculates the length of chain payed out and its descent speed, among other factors. These data are sent to a screen, which may be part of the boat's electronic display panel or incorporated into the counter's remote control. Wireless or cabled, all must have a source of electric power.
How to chooseChoice will depend on compatibility with the anchor windlass. If display panel space is limited, consider a counter with a screen in the remote control.
- Increased safety at anchor
- Additional cable and/or screen on board
