A scuba pressure gauge measures the pressure of the air remaining in the scuba tank. This allows the diver to determine how much longer the dive may last.
ApplicationsThese instruments are indispensable for all scuba divers, who must be able to calculate how long they may remain underwater, both before and during a dive. Similar, non-submersible devices are designed only to check pre- and post-dive tank pressure ashore or aboard a vessel.
TechnologiesA pressure sensor moves a needle around a dial, where pressure is indicated in bars or pounds per square inch (psi). The gauge is attached to the first stage of the regulator via a high-pressure hose, enabling the diver to check it during the dive. Some have luminous dials facilitating reading in low light. Other models also indicate water temperature.
How to chooseGauge scale varies. Newer, high-pressure tanks require use of a gauge able to read 350 bars or more. Simple models that screw onto the tank valve are suitable for surface pressure checks and fill stations.
