A dock ladder is primarily a safety feature enabling someone who has fallen into the water to climb out.
ApplicationsAll marina docks should be equipped with such ladders to reduce the death toll among accidental fall victims unable to climb out of the water in the absence of a ladder. They also can be used for swimming in marinas with suitably clean water or to board or leave a vessel at very low tide. A few models serve to board boats with high freeboard from the dock.
TechnologiesThese ladders can be permanently bolted to the dock or removable and portable. They are made of stainless steel, aluminum or fiberglass, with treads of metal or rot-resistant wood. Some are telescopic or folding to adapt to tidal variations. This also prevents permanent immersion of the end of the ladder, avoiding algal growth and scum buildup.
Most boarding ladders fold for easy stowage aboard, and are usually found on yachts and larger boats.
Choice will depend on the locale's tidal range. Telescopic and folding ladders are an advantage where water level varies significantly.
