Your suggestions for improvement:
A fire monitor is a fixed, high-capacity water canon designed for fire-fighting purposes, though it also can be used against pirate attacks. Control may be manual or remote. The latter is either electric or hydraulic.
ApplicationsThis fire-fighting equipment is located on open decks, and is often designed so foam can be injected upstream. It can deliver a large volume of water over dozens of meters. Common on rescue boats, tug boats and fireboats, it also can be found on other vessels including passenger liners, LPG and LNG carriers, very large and ultra large crude carriers (VLCC and ULCC).
TechnologiesThe monitor is connected to the vessel's fire-fighting system. Pumps draw up seawater, delivering it at adequate pressure and volume to the canons.
How to chooseWhen choosing between manually and remotely controlled monitors, the unit's location must be taken in to account. The former require that the operator have rapid access and room to maneuver. Capacity and pressure are other criteria to be considered.
- Manual or remote control
- Requires only a single operator
- Slower activation if manual
- Manual operator exposed to risk
