A life jacket is a piece of safety equipment designed to allow an adult, a child or even an animal who has fallen overboard to remain afloat, head above the water's surface, while awaiting rescue.
ApplicationsThese devices are mandatory aboard all craft, whether recreational or commercial. National regulations specify requirements and establish product certification procedures.
TechnologiesCharacteristics include buoyancy, measured in Newtons or kilograms, and inflation method, if any. Polystyrene models require no inflation. Others require oral or manual inflation, or have an automatic system with hydrostatic or salt-tablet activation. Some have reflective strips to increase their visibility at night, while others feature flashing lights. Certain models include a safety harness that can be attached to the boat in rough seas.
How to chooseChoice will depend on the wearer's height and weight. Certain models are designed specifically for children and pets. Life jackets with automatic inflation are comfortable to wear uninflated while sailing, and offer the additional advantage of being effective even if the user falls into the water unconscious. A crotch strap offers additional safety. The jacket must be certified by the country where the vessel is registered.
