A luffing jib crane is a piece of port equipment for lifting and moving heavy loads such as containers, bulk cargoes and bales. Its articulated arm, the jib, offers more mobility than a fixed arm.
ApplicationsSuch cranes can take the form of stationary or mobile port equipment, or can be installed aboard ships for additional cargo-handling autonomy.
TechnologiesThese devices can be stationary or move on wheels, caterpillar tracks or rails. Their articulated arm gives them more flexibility and maneuverability than fixed-arm models. However, there is a block and tackle with cable at the lifting end of the arm. Load capacity ranges from a few tons to several thousand tons. Most are powered by a diesel or electric motor, with a hydraulic system for arm operations.
How to chooseIn addition to maximum load capacity, choice will depend on installation location, whether the crane will be fixed or mobile and its reach, a function of jib length. In the case of shipboard cranes, consider available installation space. If the crane is electric, very that the on-board power supply is adequate.
