The bowsprit, extending beyond the bow, also serves as a kind of mast. In addition to supporting the sails, masts also hold antennas and wind generators. Windsurfer masts are increasingly sophisticated carbon fiber structures.
TechnologiesMasts are made of wood, aluminum or composites, in a single piece or several segments. They are supported by a more or less complex system of stays and shrouds, sometimes tensioned by spreaders. Some masts on large cruising sailboats incorporate roller furling.
