Your suggestions for improvement:
An Optimist sailing dinghy can carry one or two persons. Its ease of rigging and transport makes it particularly suitable for young beginners.
ApplicationsSailing schools the world over have almost universally chosen the Optimist as the learner's sailing craft par excellence.
TechnologiesOptimists have an open, rectangular hull with a flat stem. The centerboard case is in the bow. Hulls for training and sailing schools are often polypropylene, a strong but relatively heavy material. Lighter, faster racing models are made of laminated fiberglass.
Optimists have sprit rigs, the simplest there is, comprising a mast, a trapezoidal sail, a sprit for sail tensioning and sometimes a boom. A rudder and retractable centerboard complete the gear. More complex, higher-performance rigging is available. Optimist class regulations govern dimensions and sail area.
Many builders offer Optimists, whose design dates back to 1947. The International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA) certifies the molds they use. Certified manufacturers must affix an IODA plaque to the vessel and engrave the hull number in several places on the boat. Quality varies, and non-certified copies can be found. Verify that class regulations are observed and favor an authorized manufacturer if your goal is racing.
