Overalls protect a sailor's legs and part of the torso from spray and cold.
ApplicationsThese garments vary in their thermal protection and waterproof characteristics, and can be designed for coastal or offshore sailing. Both professional and recreational sailors often wear them under a sailing jacket, pea coat or similar clothing.
TechnologiesThere is ongoing research into the synthetic fabrics used for these garments, often resulting in patents and new brand names. Today's high-tech material is waterproof and breathable, allowing perspiration to evaporate while protecting from cold and spray. Less expensive models made of other fabrics still offer substantial protection.
The seat and knees can be padded and reinforced for increased comfort and durability. Some have watertight seals of flexible neoprene or latex at the ankles. Suspenders, waist and cuffs are generally adjustable. A front zipper facilitates donning and removing the overalls. Certain models have pockets, sometimes fleece-lined, for a cellphone, VHF or other small items.
In addition to aesthetic factors, choice will depend on sailing environment. Coastal wear is light and flexible, while high-seas garments are thicker and afford more protection. Height, weight, age and sex will also affect selection.
