Your suggestions for improvement:
A steering wheel pedestal is a vertical support for a sailboat's wheel which also houses the rack and pinion system linking it to the rudder cables.
ApplicationsPedestals are essential gear for any sailboat equipped with wheel steering, so long as there is sufficient room in the cockpit. Some include a panel for compass and electronic instruments, as well as stowage for small items.
TechnologiesThese devices consist of a rectangular column of carbon fiber or fiberglass installed on the deck. The wheel is linked to the rack and pinion steering gear within, the entire assembly supported by a bearing. Turning the wheel to port or starboard activates one or the other of the cables linked to the rudder post. On some boats with twin steering wheels, the pedestals are angled to provide easier access between them, while others have folding wheels.
How to chooseStandard pedestal sizes are produced for boats and, especially, wheels of different dimensions, though the wheel is usually supplied with the pedestal. Carbon fiber is the lightest, but also the most expensive material. A folding wheel should be considered where space is limited.
