A through-hull transducer is an electronic device mounted within the hull to collect speed, depth, water temperature and other data, and to transmit it to the craft's main electronics console.
ApplicationsThese instruments are intended primarily for use on leisure craft of any size with a rigid hull.
TechnologiesTransducers can be plastic, bronze or stainless steel. A hole is drilled through the craft's hull while it is out of water. A watertight cylinder is inserted into the hole and capped. Once the boat is back in the water, the transducer is mounted in the cylinder such that its outboard end is in contact with the water.
Such devices gather data relative to speed, water temperature, depth and other parameters, depending on model. Graphic depth sounder transducers with multi-beam and multi-frequency capability can measure great depths and wide swaths of the seabed. Some models use ultrasound technology, while others measure speed via a mechanical device that spins as the boat moves through the water.
The transducer should be the same diameter as the hole in the hull. Its materials must be compatible with those of the hull. Do not use a metal transducer on an aluminum boat.
Some transducers are only compatible with electronics consoles made by the same manufacturer. Specify console brand and model to the retailer. NMEA hubs are sometimes required. Ultrasound transducers have no moving parts, making them more reliable and durable, and less subject to fouling than mechanical models.
