Your suggestions for improvement:
A winch handle is a portable device used to turn a winch.
ApplicationsThis gear is indispensable on any sailboat with a winch, i.e., nearly every cruising or racing sailboat on the water.
TechnologiesWinch handles must be sturdy enough for the stress of vigorous use. Thus, most are of stainless steel or cast aluminum. Floating plastic models, less common, offer the advantage of being easily retrieved if dropped overboard.
Two-handed models permit more forceful winching for onerous tasks such as raising sail, sheeting in or sending a crew member aloft. Handles with longer or telescopic arms offer more leverage, reducing user fatigue. Certain models include a locking mechanism to keep the handle from jumping out of the winch socket. Electric handles are battery-powered for nearly effortless winching.
An electric handle reduces effort, but battery life and recharging aboard must be considered. The longest models are the most efficient, but require additional clearance around the winch.
