The tiller is an important part of the steering gear, and the design is covered by strict rules of classification societies when the boat is built to class. They are designed to withstand high loads from hydraulic rams, rudders and tie-bars, and minimise stress levels in the steering system.
CJR can offer a number of standard types of tillers including: single arm, double arm, single fork arm and double fork arm. They are designed to be used with rod or clevis ends of hydraulic rams and tie-bars.
CJR also manufacture custom made tillers for specific applications such as double arm tiller with spherical bearings to centre the load from hydraulic ram and tie-bar and prevent tiller arm from twisting. The strength of newly designed custom tillers is carefully analysed by FEA under highest loading condition.
MANUFACTURING
Tillers can be cast in nickel aluminium bronze and manganese bronze or fabricated in stainless and mild steel. They are machined to the highest standards on our 5-axis machine tools to suit rudder stock, hydraulic ram ends and tie bar ends.
INSTALLATION
Tiller arms can be clamped onto the rudder stock and secured with high tensile bolts. The connection is usually keyed to add additional security and prevent any from rotation on the stock.
AFTERSALES SUPPORT
CJR tillers are maintenance free for their lifespan. CJR will select, design and supply tillers to any boat to any specific client requirements.
