Description

A ducted propeller is the best solution when the operating speed of the vessel is below 10 knots (18,5 km/h). Due to the shape of the nozzle around the propeller, it acts like an airplane wing, where the water speed around the wing shape generates extra thrust due to the ‘lift’ effect of the nozzle. Optimizing performance The lift force generated by the water flow around the nozzle can develop around 50% of the propeller thrust at zero speed. The resulting force generated by the lift of the nozzle decreases when the water speed increases. The propeller diameter with a nozzle is smaller than an open propeller since the nozzle needs space as well. To take not too much space, the propeller diameter is smaller which makes that it has a higher blade load and brings a higher water speed through the nozzle which enlarge the effect of the lift force of the nozzle. Efficiency by design Current Motion has designed their thrusters with maximum efficiency in mind, so the maximum diameter which can be chosen is the optimum propeller diameter in relation to the load and low speed. It is possible to use a smaller propeller diameter, which creates a smaller system diameter as well, for lower power or faster vessel speeds. However, above approx. 13 knots the resistance of the nozzle creates more drag than the gain of thrust due to this nozzle. Product features Increased efficiency A nozzle around the propeller of an Azimuth thruster enhances its efficiency. It directs water flow better, creates lift force, and improves thrust performance. This leads to fuel savings and lower operating costs, especially at low vessel speeds.
