Description of wood: Elm has striking growth rings due to the large earlywood receptacles, which gives the wood an attractive flame pattern, but the grain a coarse appearance. The heartwood of elm is light brown to dull dark brown, sometimes with a greenish shine. Due to Dutch elm disease (caused by a fungus that kills the tree after a few years) the European elm population has been drastically reduced, as a result of which elms are now rarely available.
