Drillship is another type of high valued-added vessel that is designed for exploratory offshore drilling of new oil wells. Building a drillship requires the use of advanced shipbuilding and offshore drilling technologies.
In 1998, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) became the firstKorean shipbuilder that constructed a drillship (Deepwater Pathfinder). In March 2012, with its accumulated expertise and experience, SHI successfully delivered Stena Icemax, the world’s first drillship designed for drilling in the Arctic region, to Stena, the Swedish shipping company. As of the end of 2015, SHI’s accumulated contracts of drillship stood at 64 units, out of the total large drillship orders placed worldwide since 1996, accounting for 42% of the world’s market share.
