The livarde or balestron is a spar used to deploy a quadrangular gaff sail. This part can be made of wood and can vary in angle relative to the mast, generally inclined from 30° to 45°.
This spar makes it possible to effectively deploy and control a gaff sail or a balestron boom sail, and thus offering precise control over its tension and angle relative to the wind, and possibilities for optimizing performance while requiring a pay particular attention to its adjustment and use.
