The mast of the lateen rig, also called the “tree”, is quite short and never exceeds the length of the boat. Generally, it is cut from a single tree, and some of these “trees” may have exceeded 25 meters in height and 50 cm at the base. This mast is installed in a mortise dug into the keel mass and held at deck level by a stanchion, even if we can find other types of assembly according to tradition. In the region of Catalonia, the masts have a marked forward inclination unlike the rigging of Provence. In general, these spars do not have fixed guying, and this is reduced to a maneuver established against the side of the antenna: the line. Sometimes, the halyard brought back to the rear also plays a supporting role, but it is more commonly brought back along the mast. The latter has a sheave housed in the head to allow the passage of the halyard.
