The antenna is an essential part of the rigging of a lateen sail, a type of triangular sail characteristic of Mediterranean shores. The antenna is a long, thin yard which crosses the mast obliquely. It is generally composed of two parts, the quill and the quarter (or car), linked together by rusts. The quarter, located at the bottom, is more rigid than the quill. The antenna extends down to the front of the boat where it is attached, and the reefing strips are high and parallel to the antenna. Unlike other types of sails such as square or boom sails, the antenna allows you to move the tack by operating the quarter, thus offering three-dimensional navigation and allowing you to position yourself with a downwind perpendicular to the progress of the ship.
